Terrell Owens has four children with four different women. Three of the four mothers of Owens’ children accused him of either not paying child support at all or paying it insufficiently in a May 8, 2012, Dr. Phil show. At one point, according to Owens, he was paying child support totaling around $45,000 a month.
Terrell Owens is an American former football wide receiver who played 15 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers of all time, Owens ranks third in NFL history in career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
Owens was born in Alexander City, Alabama to Marilyn Heard and L.C. Russell, his neighbor. At the age of 10, he discovered his father’s identity after developing an interest in his daughter, only to later learn that she was his sister. Owens grew up with three other siblings and was raised by his mother and grandmother. He had a keen interest in football and was an avid fan of Jerry Rice. However, his grandmother initially prohibited him from participating in sports until high school. Owens attended Benjamin Russell High School, where he excelled in football, baseball, track, and basketball. He did not make the starting lineup for his high school football team until his junior year, when one of his teammates was unable to play due to illness.
During his time at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Owens excelled in basketball, football, and track. He made a significant impact on the basketball court, playing in the 1995 NCAA tournament and becoming a starter in his sophomore year.
In football, Owens caught 38 passes for 724 yards and eight touchdowns in his sophomore year, and 34 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns in his junior year. His impressive performance earned him respect in the NCAA, resulting in him facing double coverage more frequently during his senior year, limiting him to 43 receptions for 667 yards and one touchdown. Owens held the single-season receptions record at Chattanooga until it was broken in 2007 by Alonzo Nix.
Additionally, he anchored the school’s 4 × 100 relay team at the NCAA championship during his senior year and participated in the Senior Bowl, a college all-star game played by college seniors, in preparation for the NFL Draft.
Despite his impressive college career, Owens’ visibility to NFL scouts was limited due to playing at an FCS school that did not have a winning season during his time there. As a result, he dropped to the third round of the 1996 NFL Draft, where the San Francisco 49ers drafted him 89th overall.
Owens made his professional debut against the New Orleans Saints, serving as a member of the 49ers’ special teams. He recorded his first two catches against the Carolina Panthers on September 22, 1996, for a total of six yards. Owens’ first touchdown came on October 20 against the Cincinnati Bengals, where he caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Steve Young in the fourth quarter, tying a game eventually won by the 49ers 28–21.
Terrell Owens has fathered four children with four different women. During a May 8, 2012 episode of the Dr. Phil show, three of the mothers of Owens’ children alleged that he had either failed to provide adequate child support or had provided it insufficiently. Owens himself stated that he had previously paid a monthly sum of approximately $45,000 in child support.
