In 1999, she made her acting debut after landing a small role in one episode of the TV show My Parents Are Aliens.

Not too long after making her acting debut, she then appeared in a couple of episodes in the series No Angels and The Chase.

In March 2007, she started playing the role of Kayleigh Morton on the ITV soap opera Coronation Street. In the same year, she made her theatrical film debut in the comedy-drama film creation Mrs. Ratcliffe’s Revolution.

In 2009, Barden played the part of Pea in the stage production Jerusalem which took place at the Royal Court Theatre in London. She was later transferred to the Apollo Theatre in the West End.

In 2010, she made a notable appearance in the movie Tamara Drewe. A year after, she portrayed the role of Sophie in the film Hanna.

From 2012 to 2015, she has done multiple projects in a row including the urban horror Comedown, In the Dark Half, Mindscape, Lullaby, The Outcast, and Far from the Madding Crowd.

In October 2019, she made a cameo in the music video for Maniac by Conan Gray.
